Flittabus runs scheduled services 6 days a week, serving the towns and villages in Central Bedfordshire. Anyone can use Flittabus but the majority of passengers are elderly and rely on Flittabus for their weekly shopping. Drivers get to know the regulars and will often help with shopping bags. Whenever possible we try to drop passengers off as close to their home as possible. Our buses are not adapted for wheelchair users and drivers are not expected to assist passengers with boarding and alighting from the bus. No previous experience of driving buses is required - our volunteer drivers come from all walks of life.
Typically, drivers commit 2 mornings or afternoons a month, can choose which day/s suit them best and will receive full training including MiDAS (Mini Bus Driver Awareness Scheme). The D1 category on the driving licence is required, and people who have passed their test pre 1997 should have this category on their driving licence. Drivers can continue driving to age 75. There is also the opportunity to drive the buses on excursions to places of interest, and the driver will usually have free admission on these occasions.
