Non-Medical Prescribing Support Volunteer

As an NMP Support Volunteer, you are an equal and valued member of the clinical/Healthcare team, supporting them in the day-to-day delivery of clinical interventions. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone who is currently working within a clinical/prescribing setting and wants to broaden their skills knowledge and understanding whilst gaining experience in the substance misuse field.

Our service users’ health and wellbeing is important to us so you will be playing a pivotal role in supporting the promotion of healthier lifestyles and harm reduction interventions including providing naloxone within our services and community hubs. You will be working with clients to prepare them for a medical review this will include taking blood pressure, screening for substances, and discussing expectations. You will also be supporting our prescribing clinics gaining an understanding of our medical interventions and prescribing regimes.

You will be working closely with staff and partner agencies supporting service users to access treatment and clinical interventions. This is a rewarding role which allows you to gain practical skills and experience while making a real difference to our service users lives.

Key Activities:
• Support the team to undertake healthcare assessments.
• Support and gain and understanding of medical, phase 1 and alcohol assessments/ reviews.
• Complete and follow up on referrals to specialist care providers and share outcomes with health and wellbeing nurse, non-medical prescriber, and specialist doctor.
• Support team in the management of prescriptions- logging, script change forms, issuing prescriptions and gain an understanding of checking and signing prescription batches.
• Support and gain an understanding of titrations- examination and understanding the processes that support decision making around dose increases.
• Shadow MARAC meetings/MDT meetings/complex case meetings
• Prepare service users ready for clinics.
• Support the delivery of clinics and interventions including administrative duties.
• Record activities and interventions undertaken.
• As part of the team, participate in the promotion of health and wellbeing interventions.
• Support the delivery of detox interventions.
• Assist and carry out screening processes including urine and saliva tests.
• Liaise with other partner agencies including primary care and pharmacies ties:
• Engage in supervision for the above specified tasks

Education Knowledge and Experience:
• Registered Nurse, Pharmacist or Allied Health Professional
• V300 Independent & Supplementary Prescribing qualification
• Ability to work with professional boundaries.
• Experience of working within clinical/prescribing settings.
• Good verbal and written communication skills
• IT literacy
• Excellent time management skills, and an ability to work on own initiative prioritising accordingly.
• Ability to liaise and work in partnership with a wide range of professionals and agencies.
• Ability to respect and maintain confidentiality.

Skills & Attributes Ability to maintain professional boundaries and act with integrity. Experience working within clinical or prescribing environments. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Proficient in the use of IT systems and digital tools. Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise workload and work independently. Ability to build effective working relationships and collaborate with a wide range of professionals and partner agencies. Understanding of the importance of confidentiality and the ability to handle sensitive information appropriately. Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team while using initiative when required.

This volunteering opportunity offers valuable hands-on experience within a clinical and substance misuse setting. Volunteers will gain: Practical experience supporting clinical interventions and prescribing services. An enhanced understanding of substance misuse treatment, recovery pathways, and harm reduction approaches. Training and experience in health promotion, including naloxone awareness and overdose prevention. Opportunities to develop clinical skills such as blood pressure monitoring, substance screening, and preparing clients for medical reviews. Increased confidence in communicating with service users, healthcare professionals, and partner agencies. Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

We require someone who is available 1-2 days / week on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.

Availability of personal protective equipment (PPE) where required for specific clinical activities. Clear signage and information promoting infection prevention and control practices.
