As a Healthcare Support Volunteer, you are an equal and valued member of the Healthcare team, supporting them in the day-to-day delivery of health and wellbeing interventions. Our service users’ health and wellbeing is really important to us so you will be playing a pivotal role in supporting the promotion of healthier lifestyles and harm reduction interventions. Following training you will support the facilitation and delivery of Blood Borne Virus (BBV) screening and providing naloxone medication to clients. You will be supporting clients who are accessing community detoxes at our service and help to run testing event days. You will be working closely with staff and partner agencies supporting our service users to access treatment and clinical interventions.

Key Activities:
• As part of the team, participate in the promotion of health and wellbeing interventions.
• Screen for blood borne viruses and contribute to care planning to assure effective referrals to Hepatology and GUM services to enable assessment for specialist treatment. Support the provision of pre and post blood borne virus test discussion.
• Record activities and interventions undertaken on our client database.
• Support the team to undertake healthcare assessments, where appropriate.
• Support the delivery of detox interventions.
• Assist and carry out screening processes including urine and saliva tests.
• Complete and follow up on referrals to specialist care providers and share outcomes with Senior / Health and Wellbeing Nurses and/or Lead Clinician.
• Support with service user involvement – taking feedback and attending service user forums (all volunteers).

Education Knowledge and Experience:
• Ability to work with professional boundaries.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
• IT literacy.
• Excellent time management skills, and an ability to work on own initiative prioritising accordingly.
• Ability to liaise and work in partnership with a wide range of professionals and agencies.
• Ability to respect and maintain confidentiality

Ability to maintain professional boundaries and work in a professional, responsible manner. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with service users, staff, and partner agencies. Good IT skills and confidence using digital systems and databases. Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks and work independently using own initiative. Ability to develop positive working relationships and collaborate with a wide range of professionals and external agencies. Understanding of the importance of confidentiality and the ability to handle sensitive information respectfully and appropriately.

This volunteering opportunity offers valuable hands-on experience within a clinical and substance misuse setting, providing an excellent foundation for anyone interested in healthcare, nursing, or wider health and social care careers. Volunteers will gain: Practical experience supporting clinical interventions and prescribing services. An enhanced understanding of substance misuse treatment, recovery pathways, and harm reduction approaches. Training and experience in health promotion, including naloxone awareness and overdose prevention. Opportunities to develop clinical skills such as blood pressure monitoring, substance screening, and preparing clients for medical reviews. Increased confidence in communicating with service users, healthcare professionals, and partner agencies. Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team. Improved understanding of confidentiality, safeguarding, professional boundaries, and person-centred care. Development of transferable skills including communication, teamwork, time management, organisation, and IT proficiency. The satisfaction of making a meaningful difference to the health, wellbeing, and recovery of people accessing our services.

We are looking for someone for 1-2 days/week on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday

The premises will maintain a clean, safe, and healthy environment for volunteers, staff, and service users by following current public health guidance and infection prevention measures. This includes: Good ventilation throughout the building, with windows opened where possible and well-maintained ventilation systems. Regular cleaning and disinfection of high-touch surfaces, clinical areas, and shared equipment. Access to handwashing facilities and hand sanitiser for staff, volunteers, and visitors. Availability of personal protective equipment (PPE) where required for specific clinical activities. Clear signage and information promoting infection prevention and control practices.
