What you will be doing

Could you motivate, encourage, be non-judgemental? Do you have time, and the ability to be objective and supportive? Do you see yourself as a role model? Then you should be a mentor!
We are looking for volunteers (18yrs of age and over) to become mentors to young people. These include disengaged or excluded pupils, care leavers and young carers etc. Mentors are adults from the local or business community who spend time talking to young people with the aim of motivating and encouraging them.

Mentor sessions for most programmes take place during the school day, but for some programmes, sessions will be evenings/weekends. The time requirement is usually one hour a week and we prefer people to be able to give a year's commitment.
We provide a one day mandatory training session that takes place at Bromley EBP's offices at Masons Hill, Bromley.

Skills Description

Life experience/skills such as - An ability to encourage and motivate - Ability to listen and be objective/non-judgemental - Good communication skills and an interest in working with young people. Must be 18yrs old or over.

Directions

Meetings for school-based programmes take place in a school or community setting. For other programmes, meetings take place at a venue agreed in advance with the mentor/young person and co-ordinator.

How Long Do I Have To Volunteer For?

You need to commit to a regular volunteering opportunity of around an hour a week. The table below shows the commitment required for each level of the DofE.

Bronze

Minimum time: 3 or 6 months

You must do one of your volunteering, Physical or Skills sections for 6 months, the others for 3.

Silver

Minimum time: 6 or 12 months

If you heven't achieved your Bronze Award, you must extend your volunteering or the longer of your Physical or Skills sections to 12 months.

Gold

Minimum time: 12 or 18 months

If you heven't achieved your Silver Award, you must extend your volunteering or the longer of your Physical or Skills sections to 18 months.
