As a Group Walk Steward, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety, enjoyment, and inclusivity of our group walks. These walks are designed to accommodate participants with varying abilities, potentially including those with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, as well as CareDogs volunteers and their canine companions. You will serve as a facilitator and supporter throughout the walk, fostering a positive and inclusive environment for all involved.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide assistance and support to participants with disabilities, ensuring their comfort, safety, and inclusion throughout the walk.
Keep a register of all those in attendance.
Maintain awareness of potential hazards along the walking route and take proactive measures to ensure the safety of all participants.
Communicate clear instructions and guidelines to participants to minimise risks and promote safe walking practices.
Foster a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere during the walk, promoting mutual respect, understanding, and camaraderie among participants of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
Encourage social interaction and engagement among participants, facilitating opportunities for meaningful connections and friendships to develop.
Maintain open and clear communication with walk organisers, fellow volunteers, and participants to coordinate activities, address concerns, and share updates as needed.
Collaborate effectively with other volunteers and support staff to ensure the smooth execution of the walk and the fulfilment of participant needs.
Be the eyes and ears of the group; ensuring that everyone stays together.
Keep first aid kit on your person throughout the duration of the walk.

Compassionate and patient demeanour, with a genuine desire to support individuals of diverse abilities and backgrounds. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with both participants and fellow volunteers. A willingness to learn and adapt to the specific needs of participants. Ability to remain calm and composed in potentially challenging situations, demonstrating resilience and problem-solving skills. Prior experience in volunteer roles or activities involving outdoor recreation, community engagement, or disability support is beneficial but not required. Enjoys being around dogs.
