In-Patient Unit (IPU) volunteer

Volunteers in this role provide social interaction, companionship and holistic support to both people staying on our three in-patient wards and their families. This includes a calming presence and listening ear for them and their visitors as well as engaging to understand what matters to them most, and to support the achievement of goals set with support from the ward staff. Volunteers may also support with some ad hoc tasks and may occasionally provide company for in-patients attending external appointments or events.

• Compassionate and active listeners. • Clear communicators, able to build rapport, engage in conversation but also hold silence. • Respectful of others’ differences and choices. • Understanding of the importance of maintaining confidentiality and boundaries Document control Creation date: June 24 Review date: June 27 Risk Assessment ref/s: 24, • Confident in using their initiative, speaking with staff to ascertain what is required, then undertaking the tasks with minimal supervision but recognising when to ask for help or to seek clarification. • Willing to learn, adapt and embrace change when needed. • Emotionally resilience when faced with difficult circumstances that can affect people at end of life. • Able to follow our policies and procedures to keep everyone safe • Able to represent St Christopher’s and its values positively

Three to four hours once a week
