We are looking for volunteers who would like the opportunity to assist the Dorset Countryside Rangers with the maintenance and management of the local nature reserve of Thorncombe Woods and carry out a varied range of practical conservation tasks that will benefit the local wildlife and habitats.
Becoming a part of a friendly and dedicated volunteer team (The Furze Cutters).
Meeting people of all walks of life and making new friends.
Improving your communication and practical skills.
Opportunity to work outside in the fresh air and enjoy a different form of physical exercise.
Expand your local knowledge and identification of the Dorset enviroment, habitats and wildlife that can be found there.
Practical conservation tasks: scrub clearance , grass cutting, vegetation cutbacks, livestock checks, building nest boxes, hedgelaying and coppicing.
Widlife monitoring tasks: Assisting with surveys for Butterflies, Dragonflies, Reptiles, Birds, Flora and occasionally Dormice.
Access/ maintenence tasks: Path vegetation cutbacks, repairing and installing fences/gates/stiles, clearing drainage channels, litter picking and putting up information signs and posters.
Be able to engage with members of the public and communicate the need for habitat management and how wildlife will benefit from it.
