HMP Portland is a Young Offenders and Category C prison for male offenders. Our aim is to improve the quality of the visits for children and their families, to help maintain family relationships, to encourage play between fathers and their children during visits. We need committed volunteers to regularly support play activities in order to build relationships between fathers and their children during prison visits and Family Days.
Purpose of opportunity:
To work in the Visit Centre, Visit Hall area and Outdoor Play Area of the prison when children come to visit their family members and to facilitate play between them and their children.
To support the children and families of prisoners during visits.
To promote positive play for the family.
To build trust with the children and families who visit the prison.
To provide a signposting and information service to visiting family members, regarding ‘what to do on your first visit’, access to the ‘assisting a visit’ financial support programme and any other queries of support needs that a family may require.
To provide a tuck shop service for families during visit sessions.
To engage children in play
To help create a safe, positive play environment
To promote play between Children and their family members
To make all children and families feel welcome and valued
To report any Safeguarding concerns or any accidents.
Ensure that prisoners have appropriate activities at their visit table to promote family play.
To ensure that the play area is tidied at the end of the visit.
Monitor the condition of toys / games and report any damage.
Provide information and support to visiting family members throughout the visit, as required.
Set up and tidy away tuck shop area, serve families as required, maintain appropriate levels of hygiene and restock the tuck shop.
Comply with the requirements of working within a prison environment.
Ideally we are looking for volunteers who could make a regular commitment ideally once a week.
Visits take place every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 1.45 pm to 4.00pm.
Volunteers would need to be available from 1.15pm to 4.30pm.
Family Days take place 12 times a year on different days to regular visits.

Language Skills,General Helping
Experience of Play Work helpful but not essential. No formal qualifications are required
You must enjoy working with children and parents and be non-judgemental.
Experience of working with vulnerable children and adults would be helpful.
Ability to work both as part of a team and independently.
Enthusiasm to support vulnerable children, young people and parents.
Good communication skills.
Good interpersonal skills.
Ability to work in an non-discriminatory way
Ability to work with limited resources and space
Supervision and support (via group supervision and telephone support)
Access to Barnardo’s Hidden Sentence Training
Access to Level 2 Certificate in Food Hygiene

This is a unique opportunity if you enjoy working with children. Barnardo's will require you to complete registration and an enhanced DBS disclosure. You will also need Ministry of Justice clearance. You will be given Induction training and receive full support and supervision from staff. Travel expenses can be covered within agreed limits.
