We are currently looking for volunteers to support our community fridge (called CasterFridge) based in the Coop in Dorchester. The community fridge was opened in April and the purpose is to reduce food waste. We are donated food from supermarkets that they cannot sell because it is past its ‘best before’ but still perfectly edible. We then give this food away for free to people in the community. The fridge is open to all and doesn’t require any membership or eligibility checks for people to access this food. Since our opening day we have rescued a whopping 930kg of good food from going to landfill.
We are now looking to expand our volunteer team to help grow and guide this project. There are two different roles available for this project:
• Food loggers – volunteers are needed to collect and log food donated from the Coop. This will involve liaising with Coop staff, bagging up fresh bakery items, weighing and logging donated food, keeping the fridge clean and tidy, and labelling donated food. This role takes place at 8pm for approximately 1 hour and we currently need volunteers on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
• Welcome volunteers – This role involves welcoming guests to the fridge. The fridge is situated in the entrance to the Coop and so footfall past our fridge is very high. Volunteers offer a friendly smiling face to visitors, show our visitors what food is on offer, help them access the food, log the number of items and visitors, give out information about the project, and keep the fridge clean and tidy. Volunteers are needed at 9:30 am until about 12:00 (although often the food has all gone by 11:30). Currently we are looking for volunteers to help on Friday and Saturday.
With both of these roles you will receive a volunteer handbook and a full induction. You will also be invited to complete a free food hygiene certificate if you wish. Volunteers work in pairs so this is a fun and social role, and has a hugely positive impact on the community.
If you would like to be involved with the community fridge, either with the logging or welcoming (or both) then please get in touch and I can give you some more information.
