What will volunteers be doing?

Sort and steam donated clothes
Price and tag new donations
Sort and display books and ornaments
Keep the shop clean and tidy
Assist customers with queries

What impact will this have?

You'll be helping raise funds for our Day Centre for elderly and disabled people. The day centre provides a sense of community and support for vulnerable people who would otherwise be isolated by their personal circumstances.

You'll help impact the lives of around 40-day centre members and allow them access to trips and activities which provide stimulation for mind and body and help to keep people healthy and to maintain independence.

You'll help maintain Deptford Mission as an important community hub for the areas of Lewisham and Greenwich, for members, volunteers and shoppers alike.

Training offered

Customer service – volunteers will be shown how to engage with customers and how to answer the most common queries.

Commercial Awareness – volunteers will be shown how the layout, the displays and the cleanliness of the shop can lead to higher sales. They’ll be taught how to decipher between valuable and invaluable donations. They’ll be trained on coding and pricing of different items sold in the shop.

Organisation – volunteers will be guided on the layout of the shop, the presentation of the shop floor, the attention to detail required in order to prevent mistakes that can cost the shop vital funds.

Volunteers over 18 will be trained in steaming clothes ready for display.

Long-term volunteers will be given the opportunity to progress to till training which will incorporate money handling skills.

The following skills are recommended for the role as a voluntary charity shop assistant: Attention to detail Initiative Reliability Communication and Teamwork

Travel expenses are covered for up to £5 (with proof of purchase). A £5 shop voucher is given to volunteers who volunteer a certain amount of time each week.

Volunteers are required to volunteer at least one day a week for a minimum of three hours.

Due to the activities and objective of our charity, we have extensive experience of accommodating persons with further needs. This includes provision of wheelchair access and disabled toilets, accommodation for learning differences, working with autistic persons, and providing a tailored induction process depending on the needs of the individual.
