Crossness Pumping Station is the jewel in the crown of the Victorian London sewers. Built originally in 1865 by Sir Joseph Bazalgette our site includes beautiful examples of Victorian architecture including the Grade 1 listed Beam Engine house.
Our tour guide volunteers share this one of a kind “cathedral on the marshes” with the public on our guided tours and open days. They bring the site to life with exciting stories, photographs, and objects that tell the story of Crossness and Victorian Britain.
What you might be doing:
• Showing visitors our amazing site
• Learning and sharing London history
• Helping lead visitors around one of London’s hidden gems
• Presenting our talks on the history and architecture of London
This role is for you if:
• You are interested in working with a variety of people from different backgrounds
• You enjoying speaking to new people
• You have an interest in London’s history and architecture.
• No previous experience is necessary! If you are interested and friendly we’d love to hear from you

No previous experience necessary! If you are interested and friendly we'd love to have you involved. It is helpful if you have an interest in London's history and/or architecture, are comfortable speaking to the public, and can contribute to an inclusive charity that values diversity.

You’ll get the chance to: • Meet enthusiastic visitors from around the world • Learn new stories about London below the ground • There may be opportunities to research and develop our talks and tours We offer: • An in-person induction and routine 1 to 1 check ins with our volunteer manager to ensure the role fits your interests and aims • Complete training fitting your role, with opportunities to take part in wider training • Free parking and locker facilities as well as a volunteer canteen with free tea, coffee, and biscuits. • You will be sent our monthly volunteer newsletter The Chronicle to keep you updated with all that’s happening at Crossness

We recommend a commitment of at least two days a month when you first get started to get you set up most of our volunteers come in once or twice a week. If you would require more flexibility contact us and we can organise more flexible commitments.

When you contact us to volunteer we will organise the best transport to get you here. By train Our nearest station is Abbey Wood which is on both national rail and Elizabeth line services. By car We are situated within the Thames Water works, please park at the end of Bazalgette Way before you get to the security barrier by our visitor entrance.
