The role of The Board is to:

• determine the mission of The Courtyard and have oversight of its activities and 5-Year Strategic Plan;
• to have a very good understanding of The Courtyard’s Articles of Association;
• to lead on and support the officers on the delivery of Arts Council England’s Let’s Create 10-year strategy*;
• ensure the effective and efficient use of resources, the solvency of The Courtyard and for safeguarding its assets;
• approve the annual estimates of income and expenditure and monitor actual outturns;
• be responsible for the appointment of the Chief Executive of the organisation;
• set a framework for the pay and conditions of service of all other staff in compliance with UK employment legislation.

• a broad overview of, and the ability to address, issues relating to the full range of The Courtyard’s responsibilities • knowledge and understanding of the arts, and the ability to command respect within the arts constituency • knowledge and understanding of the county of Herefordshire and the ability to command respect amongst key county and regional stakeholders • the ability and willingness to act as an advocate for The Courtyard and to represent our work to a broad audience • the ability to think imaginatively and strategically, and contribute to effective decision-making • an understanding and commitment to diversity • An implicit understanding of the importance of fundraising to a registered charity and a commitment to assist with The Courtyard’s fundraising efforts

The opportunity to sit on the board of Herefordshire's leading arts centre.

The time commitment is variable, depending on dates of Board meetings. Board meetings are held 4 times a year, usually on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday commencing at 5.30pm and lasting approx 2 hours. Plus at least one hour is required to read board papers, which are sent out one week in advance. Board members are expected to join at least one sub-committee (3-4 meetings each per year), attend the AGM, and be present at the guest/opening nights of all in-house productions (including the Christmas panto, youth theatre and pro-am productions.

The Courtyard is situated on the A49 Edgar Street in Hereford directly opposite Hereford Football Ground. It is easily accessible on foot from Hereford town centre (5 mins to High Town) and from Hereford rail station (5-7 mins). The bus stop directly outside The Courtyard on the northbound side is served by the 492 and Zipper buses. There is a car park behind The Courtyard accessed from Penhaligon Way.
