On Sunday 8th September 2019 the Hackney Carnival will be back!
From 12pm-7pm, residents and visitors will enjoy a spectacular range of cultural events on offer. There will be a carnival procession, sound systems, a live stage and children’s play areas, but this year it is all happening in a new and exciting format, focused around Hackney Central.
Last year’s carnival took place with spectacular costumes, energetic dance, sound systems and live music from around the world. More than 25 carnival and community groups joined residents in a celebration of Hackney’s thriving cultures and outstanding creativity, as the procession weaved its way through the borough.
Approximately 100,000 people are expected to attend the carnival this year and we are seeking volunteers to help us make it a memorable event for them all.
Lead up to the Event
- You will be expected to attend a training session a week before the carnival to inform you of the details of what is expected of you on the day
Event Support Volunteers
-Supporting carnival groups at changing areas, getting ready this will mostly be based around London fields area
-Handing out maps and flags to waiting crowds
-Supporting the groups at the de-rig area on Lansdowne drive
Assisting with the carnival groups’ registration desk
-handing out wristbands, earplugs etc. to each group as they arrive
Running the information tent
-Provide up to date communications and information with residents and attendees on whatever they might need, letting them know about the app to keep up to date
Supporting artists leading drop-in art activities
Skills and qualifications required: friendliness, outgoing nature, knowledge of the local area, can-do attitude, able to work with others
Documenting through film and photography
-Documenting the procession and sound systems across Hackney central using film and photography
Skills and qualifications required: photography, film and other forms of recording
The footprint of the event runs from London Fields up to Graham road and over to Queensbridge road so there may be some walking required.
Time commitment is flexible throughout the day.
You will be supported by a Volunteer Manager and co-ordinator on the day who will manage the rotation of roles and breaks.

The volunteering roles will be all over Hackney Central but the main meeting point will be Hackney Town Hall.
The closest overground station is Hackney Central, but if this closes due to overcrowding, other near-by stations include Haggerston, Dalston Kingsland, Dalston Junction and Homerton. Roads around the area will be closed from 8 am on the day due to the Carnival procession, therefore, bus and car access will be limited.

Everyone who volunteers will receive a £20 contribution towards expenses for taking part.
