Special constables are volunteer police officers who play a vital role in our mission to make London safer. By investing your free time, you can make a real difference to our city. You'll have the same powers as a regular police constable and will get a tremendous amount of pride from giving back to the community.
You are asked to give up just 16hrs per month or 200 hours per year to perform this vital role in contributing to your local community.
Same uniform, same powers
Those committed to taking on this exciting and rewarding role will need to complete a minimum of 200 hours annually, equating to 16 hours per month. You will be based on one of the 12 Basic Command Units (BCU) that are located across the 32 London boroughs. Specials wear the same uniform and have the same powers and responsibilities as regular police officers and enjoy a variety of roles and carry out duties such as:
responding to 999 calls
foot and vehicle patrols
priority anti-crime initiatives
working in schools to provide advice on safety and crime
road safety initiatives
helping ensure safety and security at public events
presenting evidence in court
offering crime prevention advice and promoting property marking initiatives

All Metropolitan Special Constables are entitled to free travel on London’s Tube, Buses, DLR, Tramlink, Emirates Airline Cablecar, TfL operated River Bus services and TfL-operated London Overground services. Free travel is available on and off duty, and it is open to all Metropolitan Special Constables who perform at least 200 hours duty a year*. Your daily commute to and from your day job could become free.

Specials living within one of the London Boroughs or the City of London can receive a 50% rebate to the Greater London Authority (GLA) element of their Council Tax payment. This only applies to serving specials who have completed 200 hours of operational service within 12 months at the required standard and aren't subject to any kind of disciplinary process.
Special constables who have completed 200 hours of operational service and have gained their Independent Patrol Status (IPS) can apply to become a new police constable. Due to their policing experience, specials are not required to have the Certificate in Knowledge of Policing (CKP).
