Ministry of Stories is a creative writing and mentoring charity based in east London (hidden behind a secret door in the Hoxton Street Monster Supplies shop... ssshhh!). Join us as our work takes us beyond our Hoxton headquarters and into schools across Hackney, Tower Hamlets & Islington. We work in partnership with schools and teachers in east London to help get students buzzing about learning through the power of their imagination. Mentoring at these workshops provides excellent hands-on classroom experience. From poets to playwrights, story makers to speechwriters, all of our programmes are devised and delivered by professional writers and practitioners. Sessions take place during the school day, and as after school clubs.Typically we work with schools to plan brand new projects each time, based on their needs. We also have a bank of one-off workshops and set projects that schools can choose from, including:-Sketch Comedy – explores what’s funny and why, and introduces pupils to the techniques of comedy writing.-Speak Up – supports young people to craft speeches on issues they feel passionate about – typically culminating in a visit to Parliament to deliver their speeches to an invited audience.-Gothic Fiction – students enter the world of Hoxton Street Monster Supplies and are guided through writing their own tale of gothic horror.Your Role as a Writing MentorWriting Mentors are key in supporting the Writing Facilitator to run the sessions and in providing one to one attention to the children. Before each workshop begins, there is a briefing session with the Facilitator and Mentors where the session plan is discussed. After the workshop is over, there is a debrief where Writing Mentors feed back on their experience of the session. ExpectationsWe expect all of our volunteers to commit to a minimum of 6 sessions every 6 months. Workshops are usually 2 - 3 hours long, including a 30 minute briefing and a 30 minute debrief session before and after. We are especially keen to take on volunteers who can commit to our longer-term projects and volunteer each week, or every few weeks. We need about 50 volunteers each week in order to provide the one to one attention each child needs in all of our workshops. In addition to our school projects, we run five Community Writing Labs every week at the Ministry Of Stories headquarters in Hoxton.ExpectationsWe expect all of our volunteers to commit to a minimum of 6 sessions every 6 months.
