Literacy Support Volunteer (Crewmate)

We’re looking for Volunteers aged 16+ who live in and around Hackney to join our crew! As a Volunteer Crewmate, you’ll come along to our teacher-led afterschool sessions to help children aged 9 to 13 develop their reading and writing skills. By championing their work and celebrating everything they do, you will help them, one-to-one and in small groups, to become published authors! We’re looking for people who are positive about social change and love literacy. No experience working with children or young people is necessary as full training is provided.

Qualities and Skills required:
You don't need to be an expert, as a trained teacher will always be on hand to help. You just need to offer the encouragement and support that will help young people to focus, feel motivated and think outside of the box.
-Lots of enthusiasm!
-A patient and respectful approach to children and adults.
-Functional English skills.
-No other special skills required, although we're interested in hearing what you are good at.
We complete references after six sessions and you'll also be part of our wonderful volunteer community.

You need to commit to a regular volunteering opportunity of around an hour a week. The table below shows the commitment required for each level of the DofE.
Minimum time: 3 or 6 monthsYou must do one of your volunteering, Physical or Skills sections for 6 months, the others for 3.
Minimum time: 6 or 12 monthsIf you heven't achieved your Bronze Award, you must extend your volunteering or the longer of your Physical or Skills sections to 12 months.
