Beanstalk is a national children's literacy charity. They recruit, train and support volunteers, placing them into primary schools to help children who are struggling with their reading for a variety of reasons.
A Beanstalk volunteer reading helper goes into a local primary school for 90 minutes twice a week and sees the same three children one-on-one. They focus on improving the child's reading as well as their confidence and self-esteem through books, games, chat and play.
Beanstalk encourages play alongisde reading and encourages making the session fun, varied and dedicated. Each volunteer has a full day of training before starting in the school and is then given ongoing support and guidance by Beanstalk through a local coordinator.
Reading helpers are also invited to attend coffee mornings, book swaps and events throughout the year to share experiences and best practice, and to meet and chat to other volunteers and staff.
