After training, you will use games and other creative activities in weekly one-to-one sessions with children aged six to eight (Years 2 and 3) identified by their teachers as needing support in maths.

We partner state primary schools in 14 London boroughs, including Richmond. Sessions are during school hours but outside the classroom. The focus is on understanding the child's needs, building confidence, and creating an environment where the child engages in learning - always presented in a suitable way for that child.

Young children fall behind in maths for many reasons not connected with lack of ability, and we will train and support you so that you can understand their gaps in understanding and help them overcome these. You are not a "teacher", you are an "obstacle remover" - the child does the learning.

At the age we work with, maths is largely addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division up to 1,000. You do not need to be sophisticated in maths - you need to be good in encouraging children,.

Numeracy is as important a life skill as literacy, and you will be helping each child achieve their potential.

Working with young children is fun and rewarding. We hope you will enjoy volunteering!

People Skills

Good interpersonal skills to keep children interested and motivated. Confidence in basic arithmetic. Organisation, patience, imagination.

You will have the sense of achievement of making a real poistive change in children's life chances. Over half the children we support are from disadvantaged backgrounds, so you will be helping some of the most vulnerable children. You will be working within your local community and meet teachers and others at the school, as well as other volunteers. You will develop your interpersonal skills and your ability to explain ideas to other people. You will have the opportunity to progress to other roles in the charity. Working with young children is fun and rewarding in itself!

We ask you to commit to weekly sessions during term from when you start to the end of the school year. (Understanding that volunteers will have to take occasional weeks off for personal reasons.) Sessions are during the school day, typically between 9:00 and 3:15, although most schools like volunteers in the afternoon. Each session with a child is 25 to 30 minutes. Most volunteers work with 3 children for 75 to 90 minutes but if you are short of time you can choose to work with just 2 children. You will also have travel time plus you need to allow time for preparation. Initial training is about 7 hours split between in person and online

Volunteer Centre  Application Process

Volunteer Centre  Support you will receive

We will do our best to accommodate disabilities, but schools do not have the same responsibility to volunteers as they do to staff and children, and as a charity we do not have resources to buy special equipment. Eg we worked with a schools to find a chair which did not aggravate a volunteer's back problem but we would not have been able to buy a special chair. Most schools have good access for wheelchairs, but sometimes this is for the ground floor only and we would have to negotiate somewhere for the volunteer to work on the ground floor. Similarly we had a volunteer who could walk only very short distances, and we managed to find a place near the school entrance for her.
