This rewarding and varied role will support libraries to provide a culture of welcome, empowerment and understanding for people seeking sanctuary and offer services that meet their needs. You’ll be helping us deliver activities and events that celebrate the contribution of new arrivals and help them feel connected to their community, raising awareness of issues facing people in the asylum system and providing information on the library service and other sources of help and support across Slough. Be a friendly face to all our visitors and assist everyone to benefit from the full range of library services and resources.
We’re looking for good communicators, who are enthusiastic about Slough Libraries and comfortable engaging with visitors of all ages and backgrounds with patience and respect. Training and ongoing support will be provided.
Tasks could include:
• Welcoming and directing library visitors and giving tours of the library to groups
• Providing information on library services and other sources of support for residents
• Facilitating groups and discussions
• Getting feedback from residents
• Promoting our activities and events programme to residents
• Preparing materials and information packs
• Room set up and pack away
• Supporting delivery of events and activities

1. Enjoys engaging with people of all ages 2. Able to work as part of a team Essential 3. Interpersonal skills including: good communication, verbal and written commitment reliability approachable manner patience polite and friendly enthusiastic and encouraging 4. Is interested in books, reading and libraries 5. Fluency in English - the ability to converse at ease with customers and provide accurate spoken English Essential 6. An understanding of issues facing people seeking asylum, including through lived experience Desirable 7. Ability to communicate with people speaking different languages, either through fluency in the relevant language or via translation app 8. An understanding of, and commitment to, diversity, accessibility, equal opportunities and inclusion

It’s a great way to connect and meet with new people. You will be working alongside our amazing staff and existing volunteers, but you will also be meeting our library users. Volunteering could give you a whole new social network. It’s good for your mind and mood. Volunteering has been shown to make people happier, more confident and show fewer signs of mental ill health. Doing good makes you feel good. It’s good for your employment and career. Volunteering with us will give you valuable skills that you can add to your CV. You’ll be able to show you have experience of customer service and you’ll be practicing great communication skills. You’ll also be able to show that you are dependable, reliable and a great team worker. It’s fun and fulfilling. Volunteering is a fun way to explore your interests and passions. It can help you relax by offering you something different from your normal routine. If you love reading and books, we’d love you to volunteer with us and share your passion in your community.

Roughly 2-4 hours per week.
