The role of the ABC to read Volunteer is to encourage primary school children who need support with reading and who are often not aware of the interests and pleasures they can derive from books. In relaxed one to one sessions, talking, reading and playing games together, the Volunteer gradually builds up the child’s confidence and encourages him/her to enjoy reading. The Volunteer must be literate and able to relate easily to children as well as being both a clear communicator and a good listener. The sessions take place in school, mainly in the afternoon for 1 ½ hours and it is preferred that you can commit to one year with the charity once starting, ideally twice a week but once a week is considered and during term time only.

• Help the child individually by reading books together, talking and playing games.

• Help children develop a love of books.

• Help a child to read by encouraging them to use the ‘clues to reading’ such as pictures, the meaning of the text and the initial sound of the words.

• Praise and encourage the child at all times.

• Select books which the child can enjoy and read successfully, and encourage the child to make choices during the session.

• Ensure that the child leaves the session with a feeling of success.

• All employees and volunteers working with children, young people or vulnerable adults have a responsibility for safeguarding and promoting their welfare.

Befriending, Buddying & Mentoring,Support Work

Reading & Writing

The Volunteer must be literate and able to relate easily to children as well as being both a clear communicator and a good listener.

1. Helping a child build confidence and skills Volunteers give one-to-one support to children who are finding reading difficult. This individual attention can make a significant difference. Many children begin to feel more confident, participate more in class, and develop a more positive attitude towards learning. 2. Making a meaningful difference in a short time Even two short sessions each week can have a lasting impact. Volunteers often see clear progress in the children they support, which can be very rewarding. 3. Developing new skills Volunteers gain experience in communication, patience, mentoring, and supporting learning. Training and guidance help them understand how to encourage children and build their reading confidence. 4. Personal fulfilment Many volunteers describe the experience as deeply rewarding. Watching a child overcome challenges and begin to enjoy reading can give a strong sense of purpose. 5. Connection with the community Volunteering provides an opportunity to engage with local schools and communities, contributing to the educational development of children in the area.

1 1/2 hour twice a week ideally but once a week will be considered, minimum one school year is required.
