Role responsibilities

Home-Start volunteers are encouraged to work towards the increased confidence and independence of the family by:

 Setting up regular arrangements for family’s preferred method of contact (visits or telephone calls) with matched families, ensuring the dignity and identity of the individuals can be respected and protected.
 Engage with the families, reassuring them that difficulties in bringing up children are not unusual and emphasising the positive aspects of family life.
 Encouraging parents’ strengths and emotional well-being for the ultimate benefit of their own children
 Encouraging families to widen their network of relationships and to use the support and services available in the community effectively.
 Take part in reviews with the family and Co-ordinator as requested, and to identify when a family may require additional support from outside agencies, signposting families to these appropriate services where necessary.
 To keep accurate and up to date records of any contact with families and to assist the Co-ordinator in liaising with outside agencies, such as Local Authority and schools where additional information may be requested.
 Assist with the creation and delivery of an information and resource packs/activities.
 To be familiar with and committed to the Home-Start ethos and policies and practices and uphold the Home-Start ethos.
 To carry out Bookstart (encouraging reading) with families, where it has been identified as beneficial to the children.
 To support the Co-ordinator to deliver Big Hopes Big Futures (school readiness programme) with families where the need has been identified as beneficial for the children.
(More information on Bookstart and Big Hoes Big Futures will be shared during any informal interview and on the volunteer course of preparation.)


Safeguarding
 Use your safeguarding level 1 knowledge to share information with the Co-ordinator and contact the Co-ordinator immediately if there is concern about the physical or emotional well-being of any member of the family.
 Ensure you undertake Safeguarding level 1 training and that it is kept up to date, attending any refresher training as requested by the Co-ordinator.
 To ensure all records are kept up to date and the Co-ordinator is aware of any changes with the family.
 To be an active part of any Safeguarding meetings where appropriate,


Admin Development & Training
 Attend and engage in regular supervision meetings (may be virtual) with the volunteer Co-ordinator.

Community Work,Support Work

Skills and requirements:  Volunteers must be reliable and show commitment to supporting both Home-Start and Home-Start families.  Volunteers should be able to show a flexible approach where possible. Visits do occasionally get cancelled or re-arranged at the last minute due to family circumstances.  All volunteers must have good communication skills with Home-Start staff and families.  Volunteers need to have a friendly disposition and be open and honest.  Home-Start volunteers must be non-judgemental.  Volunteers should be able to build positive relationships with families.  Volunteers need to have a good understanding and awareness of professional boundaries and ensure these are adhered to at all times. This is covered further in our volunteer Course of preparation.  Volunteers must show good time keeping.  Volunteers must be able to travel to and from family homes or other agreed community bases either by car or reliable public transport.

We offer free ongoing training in of topics in early years, child development and parenting Regular supervisions and support from Family Services Coordinator Opportunities to shadow one of our Family Support Workers All expenses paid Opportunities to meet other volunteers and share experiences and peer support Experience in a Family Support environment, learning new skills

We ask volunteers give 2-3 hours a week
