Do you enjoy cycling and chatting? Pilots are volunteers who take our specially adapted tri-bike to pick passengers up from a care home and take them out for a spin, taking in parks, cycle paths and quiet roads. You will be offering not only your leg power but also an hour or two of cheerful company, supporting your passengers to enjoy the experience of being out and about. You need to be a confident cyclist, but not a super-sporty one, as the bike has a powerful electric motor.
Volunteering is on a sign up basis, so there is good flexibility, though we hope that pilots may be able to offer a ride once every few weeks on average. Volunteering starts at Nuffield Health, S11 8HA, for our care home partners in the Sharrow area. We are also looking to expand into the Low Edges area of the city and are seeking local volunteers to support activities in the area.
Befriending, Buddying & Mentoring
A competent cyclist who would feel comfortable cycling on roads around Sheffield. You do not need to be exceptionally fit as the tri-bike is battery assisted to help get up the hills! More importantly we are looking for friendly and chatty volunteers to take passengers for an enjoyable ride.
Most volunteers find this a rewarding role, and enjoy the opportunity to connect and share stories with people from an older generation, while also offering them a chance to get outside and enjoy local parks, see the seasons change and feel the wind in their hair.
Nuffield Health is on Napier Street, a short walk from Eccleshall Road (Waitrose End) which is served by a number of bus routes (81, 82, 83, 88).
