Friends of Abbey Fields (FOAF) is a non-profit association with about 200 members and is governed by constitution. The Chair ensures that the Committee gives attention to the society’s constitutional aims, including helping to maintain the Abbey Fields in its present semi-natural state under the direction of Warwick District Council. The Chair also oversees the educational work of Committee members in raising public awareness about the historical, aesthetic, wildlife and amenity value of Abbey Fields, and has enthusiasm/advocacy for Abbey Fields and nature.

The Chair presides at regular Committee meetings and an Annual General Meeting, normally in September or October. The role includes encouraging open discussion and consideration of new ideas, coordinating the activities of other Committee members, ensuring membership growth is kept to the fore, and that the Society remains legally, ethically and environmentally compliant.

The Chair takes a leading role for FOAF in liaison liaises with local Authorities, including Warwick District Council, Kenilworth Town Council, and Warwickshire County Council to ensure continued compliance with FOAF’s constitutional aims. The Chair also oversees the need for, and maintains, adequate fund-raising efforts to ensure a sustainable future.

FOAF publishes 3 or 4 newsletters during the year, and the Chair is responsible for writing a short introductory piece. Occasional communication with the Members by email is also required and meetings with other stakeholders, e.g. Warwick District Council.

This role is ideal for someone who loves Abbey Fields and is enthusiastic about preserving its unique character, as well as the local flora and fauna. The job involves overseeing the work of other members in the Committee and occasionally assisting with the organization of their tasks. The Chair will oversee meetings of the Committee and the Members, so must be able to communicate reasonably well in such a setting and ensure that the meeting is conducted properly. Contributions to the Newsletters are small, but the ability to write well is advantageous.

Working with FOAF is a rewarding experience and the Committee is a fantastic team that works together in a friendly and cooperative way. Every member plays a vital role in supporting and promoting Abbey Fields, and their enthusiasm is contagious. The Committee is experienced and can offer support in all of the Chair’s activities as required.

There are about 5 Committee meetings in the year and a 1-hour Annual General Meeting, normally in September or October. Liaising with Committee members and other stakeholders might account for 2 hours per week on average.
