Resettlement drop in volunteer Nuneaton

The WCC Migration Team are setting up drop ins across the county for families resettled through the UK Resettlement scheme and Afghan resettlement schemes. The drop ins will take place on a monthly basis at Nuneaton at Hatters Space. Drop ins will be run by two support workers from the Migration Team.

We are looking for volunteers to commit to attending drop ins on a monthly basis to work with Support Workers to help plan and host the drop ins.

The aims of the drop ins are to:
• support integration in to the local community
• link families with local agencies
• provide a focal point for key messages and information to be shared with families (housing/ESOL/employment/mental health etc)
• enable better use of time for officers (FSWS/ employment and ESOL leads) as multiple families can be seen at one time in one location
• improving English skills,
• provide an opportunity for families to come together to build community links within the Afghan (and other resettled families) community
• reduce isolation

Role of volunteers:
• Help support workers to plan the drop ins
• Offer a friendly face and conversation to create a welcoming environment for families
• Help with the smooth running of drop ins by arriving early to help set up the room and help tidy up afterwards
• Attend drop ins on a monthly basis
• Set up tea/coffee area
• Participate in the de-brief at the end of each session
• Participate in 6 monthly reviews of the drop in

Offer some/ all of the following (as agreed with the Support Worker and dependent on volunteer skills):
• Informal ESOL conversation practice
• Lead simple crafts sessions with families
• Oversee children’s area (volunteers will not have responsibility for children as this will rest with parents who will be in the same room as their children at all times)
• Support families with local orientation (eg information about services/ support/activities of interest to families in the local area)
• Support families with low level support questions (as agreed with FSW)
• Other activities as agreed with the Support Worker

Volunteers should have good interpersonal skills, a positive and respectful attitude, and the ability to work well with people from diverse backgrounds. Basic spoken English is helpful for communication, though support will be provided where possible. For roles involving children patience and a willingness to follow guidance from session leads are important. No formal qualifications are required.

Volunteers will gain valuable experience supporting individuals from diverse backgrounds, helping to build their communication, teamwork, and cross-cultural skills. This role offers a meaningful opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of refugees, while also developing confidence, empathy, and an understanding of wider social issues. Volunteers will also receive guidance, ongoing support, and access to relevant training.

By Foot: Hatters Space is a short walk from Nuneaton town centre and the bus station. Head towards Upper Abbey Street — the centre is next to the Abbey Theatre and near the Pingles Leisure Centre. By Bus: Hatters Space is about a 5-minute walk from Nuneaton Bus Station. Walk along Harefield Road, turn left onto Queens Road, then right onto Upper Abbey Street.
