Museum Gallery Engagement Volunteer - Tues-Fri

We are looking for Museum Gallery Engagement Volunteers to welcome visitors to the museum and help them connect with the museum spaces and the historic objects on display.

Market Hall Museum is a historic building located in Warwick town centre. Originally built to house Warwick’s markets the building has been a museum for over 120 years. Today we are a free museum and welcome thousands of visitors a year to see our changing exhibitions, live bee observation hive, the popular bear and 400-year-old Sheldon Tapestry. Over two floors the museum tells the history of Warwickshire from geological times to present day. Visitors to the museum can spend time dressing up, playing with games in the play space or take part in the programme of events run for adults and children. We also have an on-site shop and cafe where visitors can enjoy delicious cakes and coffee or purchase our best-selling Beekeeper’s Honey and gifts for all the family.

A Museum Gallery Engagement Volunteer role will involve:

• Talking with visitors in the galleries and answering questions about the objects and displays.
• Creating a friendly, welcoming, and inclusive environment for visitors.
• Showing visitors the resources we have to help them enjoy their visits, such as activity backpacks for families, audio description guides and sensory maps of the museum.
• Encouraging visitors to make a donation and explaining what donations are used to fund at the museum.
• Keeping an eye on the galleries and reporting any issues to staff.
• Answering questions from visitors or directing them to a member of staff for further assistance.
• Letting visitors know about the museums events and activities they might be interested in.

After gaining experience of the above, we may be able to offer the following additional opportunities

• Giving family tours of the museum
• Leading monthly museum object handling sessions with visitors.
• Research talks and tours of the museum on objects and displays that interest you.
• Support the Learning Team with family events at the museum.

We're looking for friendly, confident people who enjoy chatting with visitors and working as part of a team. A positive attitude and a willingness to engage with others are the most important qualities for this volunteer role. A knowledge of history or heritage isn’t essential to volunteer with us. Whether you're simply curious or already have a passion for heritage, this is a great opportunity to learn more and discover fascinating stories along the way. The role may involve standing for periods of time and some lightweight lifting and handling of resources.

We strive to offer flexible hours that suit you. If possible, volunteers are encouraged to provide 2 to 4 hours volunteering on a weekly basis. The current days available are Tuesday – Friday 10am – 5pm, during the museums normal opening hours.

Full training will be provided which will include: • Familiarisation with site and staff. • Induction and health and safety training. • Role-specific training. • On-going supervision and support from the site team to maintain consistency in delivery.
